What to do before help arrives
- Shut off the main water valve if water is still actively flowing.
- Stay out of standing water where electrical outlets, cords or panels are involved.
- Do not use drains or fixtures if the water is coming from a sewer backup.
- Move valuables, documents and electronics out of the affected area if it is safe to do so.
How extraction works
- Confirm the water source is stopped or isolated before extraction begins
- Remove standing water with extraction equipment appropriate to the volume and surface
- Lift and remove saturated carpet, underpad or loose flooring where it blocks drying
- Assess remaining moisture in subfloors, walls and framing
- Set drying and dehumidification equipment so the structure can dry properly
Extraction is not the same as drying
Once visible water is gone, the building materials are still wet. Extraction is followed by structural drying and moisture monitoring, otherwise trapped moisture keeps damaging finishes and creates the conditions mould needs.

Can I just use a shop vacuum myself?
For a small clean-water spill on hard flooring, sometimes. For a flooded room, a saturated basement or anything involving sewage, extraction equipment and proper drying are needed, and the plumbing source still has to be corrected.
Do you extract water from finished basements?
Yes. Finished basements are one of the most common extraction calls, and they usually also require drying and assessment of drywall, trim and flooring.
How long does drying take after extraction?
It depends on how much water was absorbed, which materials are involved and how the space ventilates. Drying is monitored rather than assumed complete after a set number of hours.
